Instagram Statistics 2026: Every Number Traced to Its Source

Instagram statistics for 2026 from Meta, Pew and DataReportal: users, growth, revenue, Reels and engagement, with what each number measures and its date.

Instagram Statistics 2026: Every Number Traced to Its Source

Instagram statistics for 2026, from the people who measured them: Instagram has more than 3 billion monthly active users and 2 billion daily active users, both stated by Meta on its earnings calls. In the U.S., 51% of adults use it, per Pew Research Center. Video drives the growth. The average business post earns likes and comments equal to 0.45% of its followers (Socialinsider, Q3 2026).

Most Instagram stats pages copy each other. One list quotes a number, a second list cites the first, and a year later nobody can say who measured it, when, or what it counted. The “1.74 billion Instagram users” figure on some stats pages is an ad-audience estimate from January 2025. It was never a user count.

This page lists only numbers we traced to the party that measured them: Meta’s results and call transcripts, Pew Research Center, DataReportal and Instagram’s own announcements. Each group answers one decision a creator or small business makes, with a short “what it means for you”. The last section lists popular Instagram stats that have no primary source.

Key Takeaways

  • Scale: More than 3 billion monthly active users (October 2025) and 2 billion daily active users (July 2026), both from Mark Zuckerberg on Meta earnings calls. Meta’s quarterly 3.64 billion counts all its apps, so it is not Instagram’s number.
  • Still growing: U.S. adult use rose from 35% in 2018 to 51% in 2026 (Pew), and more social media users name Instagram their favorite platform than any other (17.8%, GWI, 2026).
  • U.S. reach: 51% of U.S. adults use Instagram, and 79% of adults aged 18 to 29 (Pew, 2026).
  • New posts win: Nearly 45% of the Reels Instagram recommends are less than one day old (Meta, October 2026).
  • Normal engagement is under 1%: 0.45% of followers per post for business accounts in Q3 2026, per Socialinsider.
  • Sharing happens in DMs: Adam Mosseri says more photos and videos go into DMs than into Stories, and more into Stories than into the feed.
  • Check before you quote: “A send is worth 3-5x a like”, “200 DMs an hour” and “40-60% more reach for original posts” have no primary source.

The sections below explain each group and what you can do with it.

How many people use Instagram in 2026?

Instagram has more than 3 billion monthly active users and 2 billion daily active users. Mark Zuckerberg gave the monthly figure on Meta’s October 29, 2025 earnings call, a month after he and Adam Mosseri first posted it. He gave the daily figure on the July 29, 2026 call. Meta has published no newer Instagram-only user count since.

Four Instagram audience numbers compared: 3 billion monthly users, 2 billion daily users, 3.64 billion daily people across all Meta apps, and 1.99 billion accounts ads can reach.

Monthly actives count people who used the app at least once in a month. Daily actives count people who used it on a given day. The daily number is the better sign of habit, and it is new. At the end of 2025, Zuckerberg said Instagram was “just shy” of 2 billion daily actives, so it crossed that line in the first half of 2026.

The number Meta reports every quarter is different. It is called Family daily active people, and Meta’s Q3 2026 quarterly filing says it is “based on the activity of users who visited at least one of Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp.” That figure was 3.64 billion for September 2026, up 3% in a year. It is a count for all of Meta’s apps, so it is never Instagram’s number.

A fourth number causes the most mistakes. DataReportal reads Meta’s ad tools, and found that Instagram ads could reach 1.99 billion accounts in April 2026, up from 1.74 billion in January 2025. DataReportal itself says ad reach is “not a direct proxy for metrics like monthly active users.” Use it to size an ad audience, and never as a user count.

What it means for you: Quote 3 billion for scale and 2 billion for daily habit, with the date. For your own plans, the number that matters is the reach in your own Insights.

Is Instagram growing or declining in 2026?

Instagram is still growing. Meta says it reached 2 billion daily active users in July 2026, after it was “just shy” of that number at the end of 2025. Monthly users rose from 1 billion in 2018 to 2 billion in 2022 and 3 billion in 2025. In the U.S., the share of adults who use Instagram rose from 35% in 2018 to 51% in 2026, per Pew.

Three other measures point the same way:

  • Favorite platform: In GWI’s Q2 2026 survey, 17.8% of social media users aged 16 and over named Instagram their favorite platform, up from 16.7% a year earlier. That puts it first, ahead of WhatsApp.
  • Time per user: Meta said Instagram’s time per user reached an all-time high in Q3 2026.
  • Teens: 63% of U.S. teens aged 13 to 17 use Instagram, against 61% in 2024 and 59% in 2023, per Pew’s December 2025 teen survey. The change is inside the survey’s margin of error, so read it as stable. 12% of teens say they use it almost constantly.

One kind of number can fall while use grows. In October 2026, DataReportal said Meta appeared to have “purged” a meaningful number of Facebook and Instagram accounts in recent weeks, which cut the reported ad reach in several countries. A lower ad reach after a purge does not mean people left.

What it means for you: Instagram’s daily use is growing, so the channel itself is not the risk. If your own reach falls, look at your posts and your posting rate first.

Is your audience on Instagram?

In the U.S., 51% of adults use Instagram, up from 40% in 2021, according to Pew Research Center’s 2026 survey of 5,511 adults. Use falls with age: 79% of adults aged 18 to 29 use it, against 21% of those 65 and older. Worldwide, 56.6% of online adults aged 16 and over told GWI they used it in the past month.

Read Pew’s numbers the right way. “79% of adults aged 18 to 29” is the share of that age group that uses Instagram. It is not the share of Instagram’s users who are 18 to 29, which is a different and smaller number.

Women use it more than men in the U.S.: 56% against 45%, per Pew. Worldwide the ad audience leans the other way, at 52.5% male, per DataReportal’s Digital 2027 report. When GWI asks social media users aged 16 and over to name their favorite platform, Instagram comes first with 17.8% of the vote, ahead of WhatsApp at 17.1%. A year earlier its share was 16.7%. The full age, gender, income and country splits are in our Instagram demographics breakdown.

What it means for you: If your buyers are under 35, Instagram is a default channel. If they are over 65, check the age split of your own followers in Insights before you build a plan on it.

Which countries have the most Instagram users?

India has the largest Instagram audience, then the United States and Brazil. Meta does not publish users by country, so the comparison uses ad reach: the accounts Instagram ads could reach in April 2026, from Meta’s ad tools as compiled by DataReportal.

RankCountryInstagram ad audience, April 2026
1India513.55 million
2United States183.3 million
3Brazil150.7 million

India alone is more than a quarter of Instagram’s global ad reach, DataReportal notes. The UK ranks eighth with 35.5 million. A Reel can collect views from countries where you sell nothing, so compare the top countries in your Insights with the markets you sell to.

Which Instagram format gets the most engagement? (Reels statistics)

Video is where Instagram’s growth comes from. Meta said video time on Instagram grew more than 30% in a year (October 2025), and that time per user hit an all-time high in Q3 2026, with gains in both Reels and Feed. Per post, carousels still earn slightly more engagement than Reels: 0.50% against 0.48% of followers in Q3 2026, per Socialinsider.

The table compares the three main post types across two large studies. Socialinsider measures likes plus comments divided by followers, across 67.5 million posts from 579,000 business accounts. Metricool compared 24.4 million posts from 375,000 accounts in January and February 2026 with the same months of 2025.

FormatEngagement per post, 2025Engagement per post, Q3 2026What Metricool found
Carousel0.55%0.50%9 times more saves than single images
Reels0.52%0.48%More than 4 times the interactions of single images; watch time 8.5 seconds
Single image0.37%0.33-0.35%Reach down 21.96% in a year

Meta’s call transcripts add four numbers you will not find in most lists:

  • Reshares: Reels are reshared more than 4.5 billion times a day (January 2025).
  • Ranking changes: Ranking work lifted Reels time spent by 10% in Q1 2026 and by more than 4% in Q3 2026.
  • Edits: Nearly 10% of the Reels people view each day are made in Meta’s Edits app (January 2026).
  • Translation: More than half a billion people each on Facebook and Instagram watch AI-translated videos every week (April 2026).

Two rules from Instagram shape every post. Reels can run up to three minutes, up from 90 seconds, a change Mosseri announced in January 2025 and Social Media Today reported. Captions take five hashtags at most since December 2025, and our guide to how many hashtags to use on Instagram covers what to put in each slot.

What it means for you: Post Reels to build watch time and carousels to earn saves. Judge each format against its own median, because the averages differ by format. The carousel posts guide has the layouts that earn saves.

How much of what Instagram recommends is new?

A large share, and it keeps rising. Meta says nearly 45% of the Reels Instagram recommends are now less than one day old, up more than 11 percentage points from the quarter before (October 2026). On Instagram Feed, over half of recommended content is under a day old, more than double the share a year earlier (July 2026).

The trend runs through all four 2025-2026 calls. In April 2026, Meta said same-day posts made up more than 30% of recommended Reels on Instagram and Facebook, more than double a year earlier. In January 2026, it said 75% of Instagram’s U.S. recommendations now come from original posts, up 10 percentage points in one quarter.

Instagram backed this with a rule change. Its April 30, 2026 creators post extended the originality rules for Reels to photos and carousels. Accounts that mostly re-post other people’s work lose eligibility for recommendations. They get it back when most of what they posted in a 30-day period is original.

What it means for you: Recommendations favor new, original posts, so a steady flow of your own work does more than a large back catalog. Our guide to how often to post on Instagram shows how to find a rate you can keep.

What is a normal Instagram engagement rate in 2026?

For business accounts, under 1%. Socialinsider’s benchmark of 67.5 million posts from 579,000 business accounts with 1,000 to 1 million followers puts the average at 0.48% of followers per post across 2025, and 0.45% in Q3 2026. It counts likes plus comments and divides by followers.

Your own rate can look different, for three reasons:

  1. Formula: Rates divided by reach come out higher than rates divided by followers, because reach is usually smaller than your follower count. Compare like with like.
  2. Account type and size: The benchmark covers business accounts with 1,000 to 1 million followers. It says little about a 500-follower account or a celebrity.
  3. Niche: Rates vary by topic. Our engagement rate benchmarks by niche table splits them by 15 niches.

Instagram’s own guidance points at three signals. In January 2025, Mosseri said “the top three signals that matter most for ranking are watch time, likes and sends,” as Social Media Today reported. He told creators to watch average watch time, likes per reach and sends per reach in Insights.

What it means for you: Compare your rate with your own last 30 days first and with a benchmark second, using the same formula both times. Our list of the Instagram metrics worth tracking each week sets up that routine.

What DM and Stories statistics tell you

Instagram users share more photos and videos in DMs than in Stories or the feed. In a May 2025 interview, Adam Mosseri said far more photos and videos are shared into DMs than into Stories, and far more into Stories than into the feed. In September 2025 he said almost all of Instagram’s growth in recent years came from DMs, Reels and recommendations.

The sources behind those lines are Business Insider’s interview with Mosseri and TechCrunch’s report on the 3 billion milestone. Mosseri also said Instagram would “reorient the app more around DMs, Reels, and recommendations.” Meta’s numbers point the same way:

  • Business chats: Across all of Meta’s messaging apps, people have more than 1 billion active threads with business accounts every day (October 2025). This covers WhatsApp and Messenger too, so it is not an Instagram-only figure.
  • Stories: The last Stories user count Meta published was 500 million daily users, in January 2019, as TheWrap reported at the time. Nothing newer exists, so label it 2019.

Meta’s developer rules decide how fast a business has to answer. A business has 24 hours to reply after a person messages it (“For most user actions, it lasts 24 hours,” per Meta’s messaging documentation). A reply to a comment must go within 7 days, and “only one message can be sent to the commenter” until they answer, per the private replies page.

What it means for you: A comment, a Story reply or a DM opens a short window. Answer inside it with the link or the answer the person asked for. CreatorFlow, a Meta Tech Provider (since December 2025), sends that first reply automatically when someone comments a keyword, replies to a Story or sends a DM. Our Instagram DM automation guide shows the setup, and our list of ways to make money on Instagram shows where those conversations lead.

How much money does Instagram make?

Meta does not report Instagram’s revenue. The last official figures come from a court filing: Instagram earned $32.4 billion in ad revenue in 2021, up from $11.3 billion in 2018. For 2025, the research firm eMarketer forecast $37.13 billion in Instagram ad revenue in the U.S. alone, a little over half of Meta’s U.S. ad revenue.

PeriodInstagram ad revenueSource
2018$11.3 billionMeta court filing, April 2024

First half of 2022$16.5 billionMeta court filing, April 2024
2025, U.S. only (forecast)$37.13 billioneMarketer, December 2024 forecast

Meta disclosed the 2018 to 2022 figures in the FTC’s antitrust case, as Business Insider reported in April 2024. Reuters quoted the eMarketer forecast in April 2025. Two newer Meta figures cover Instagram and Facebook together. Reels passed an annual revenue run-rate of more than $50 billion (October 2025). Partnership ads, where a brand runs ads through a creator’s post, grew more than 97% in a year and passed a $15 billion run-rate (October 2026).

What it means for you: Brands now put real ad budgets behind creator posts. If a brand asks to run your post as a partnership ad, treat that as a separate use, with its own price and time limit.

Instagram stats that have no primary source

Several numbers that appear on many stats pages trace to no Meta, Instagram or research publication. We checked each one against the original statement or documentation in November 2026. If you see one of these, use the line in the right column.

The Instagram algorithm guide covers what Mosseri has said about ranking signals in more detail.

How to check an Instagram statistic before you use it

Ask five questions of any number before it goes into a pitch deck, a client report or a caption:

  1. Who measured it? Meta, Pew, GWI or a named study. If the link goes to another stats list, keep clicking until you reach the measurer.
  2. What unit is it? Monthly users, daily users, all-Meta daily people or ad reach.
  3. When was it published? Instagram figures change every quarter. A 2019 number belongs in a sentence that says 2019.
  4. Which accounts? Business accounts, accounts of a set size, one country or one device.
  5. Does the claim match the words? “Up to 3x” in a study does not become “3x” in your deck.

FAQ

How many people use Instagram in 2026?

Instagram has more than 3 billion monthly active users, a figure Mark Zuckerberg gave on Meta’s October 29, 2025 earnings call. Meta has not published an updated monthly count since. In the U.S., Pew Research Center’s 2026 survey found 51% of adults use Instagram.

How many daily active users does Instagram have?

Instagram reached 2 billion daily active users, according to Zuckerberg on Meta’s July 29, 2026 earnings call. At the end of 2025 he described it as “just shy” of 2 billion. Meta’s 3.64 billion daily figure for September 2026 counts all of its apps together, so it is not Instagram’s number.

Does Meta still report Instagram user numbers every quarter?

No. Meta’s quarterly results report Family daily active people, a single count across Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp. Instagram-only figures appear only when executives mention a milestone on an earnings call or in a post, as with 3 billion monthly users in 2025 and 2 billion daily users in 2026.

What is a good Instagram engagement rate in 2026?

Socialinsider’s benchmark puts the average for business accounts at 0.45% of followers per post in Q3 2026, counting likes and comments. Carousels averaged 0.50% and Reels 0.48%. A rate above your own 30-day average is the better goal, because averages differ by niche, size and formula.

How much time do people spend on Instagram each day?

Meta does not publish time spent per app. The newest outside figure is 1 hour 40 minutes a day per user, from Similarweb data for Instagram’s mobile apps in August 2026, reported in DataReportal’s Digital 2027 report. It does not count web use. Meta has said only that Instagram time per user hit an all-time high in Q3 2026.

Which country has the most Instagram users?

India has the largest Instagram audience, with 513.55 million accounts that ads could reach in April 2026. The United States is second with 183.3 million and Brazil third with 150.7 million. These are ad reach figures from Meta’s ad tools, compiled by DataReportal, because Meta publishes no user count by country.

Is Instagram still growing in 2026?

Yes. Meta says Instagram reached 2 billion daily active users in July 2026, and more than 3 billion monthly users in 2025, up from 2 billion in 2022. Pew found that 51% of U.S. adults use it in 2026, up from 35% in 2018. In GWI’s 2026 survey, more social media users named it their favorite platform than any other.
