To use Instagram Stories, tap + in the top-right corner of your feed or swipe right, take or upload a photo or video, add text or stickers, and tap Your story. Each clip runs up to 60 seconds and stays live for 24 hours before it moves to your private archive. Replies land in your DMs, and Meta gives connected reply tools 24 hours to answer each one.
Posting is the easy part of Instagram Stories. Every Story has a message box under it, so the easiest response for a viewer is a private message to you. A poll vote, a public comment and a typed reply all count as engagement, but they land in three different places. Only the reply starts a conversation you can continue.
This guide covers posting step by step, the current limits, every sticker Instagram lists and where each response goes, Close Friends, Highlights, mentions, the viewer list, Story Insights and Meta’s 24-hour messaging window. It ends with a weekly routine for creators and small businesses that turns views into replies, and replies into answered conversations.
Key Takeaways
- Posting is five short steps: open the camera, capture or upload, edit, pick Your story or Close Friends, then check who watched
- Limits as of November 2026: one clip runs up to 60 seconds, there is no daily limit, and a Story stays live for 24 hours
- Each sticker sends the response somewhere different: a poll vote becomes a number in Insights, while a typed reply lands in your DM inbox
- Replies are private, comments are public: a reply opens a chat with you, and a comment is visible to everyone who can see the Story
- Insights stay for two years: the Story disappears after 24 hours, but its metrics remain
- The reply window is Meta’s: an app that answers for you has 24 hours from each reply
- Bottom line: ask for a typed reply, answer every one inside 24 hours, and keep your best frames in Highlights
How to use Instagram Stories, step by step
Tap + at the top right of your feed, or swipe right, to open the Stories camera. Take a photo, hold the shutter to record, or upload from your gallery. Add text, stickers, music or a filter, then tap Your story to share with followers or Close Friends to share with a smaller list.
- Open the camera. Tap + in the top-right corner of your feed, or swipe right from the feed.
- Capture or upload. Tap the shutter for a photo, hold it for video, or tap the gallery icon in the bottom-left corner.
- Edit the frame. Add stickers, text, drawings or a filter. Layout splits one frame into a grid of up to 6 photos, and Collage animates 5 or more photos.
- Pick the audience. Tap Your story, Close Friends, or send the Story to specific people by DM.
- Check the result. Swipe up on the live Story to see viewers and responses.
These steps follow Instagram’s 2026 guide to Stories, which also says you can post from a computer at instagram.com, with some stickers on mobile only. Eligible accounts can schedule a Story too: tap the three-dot menu before sharing, tap Schedule and choose a time. Instagram says the option depends on eligibility and the path may change (checked November 2026).
How long do Instagram Stories last?
A Story stays live for 24 hours from the moment you post it. One clip can run up to 60 seconds, and Instagram splits a longer video into back-to-back clips. You can post as many Stories a day as you want. After 24 hours each Story moves to your private Stories Archive, and it stays on your profile only if you add it to a Highlight.
| Instagram Stories spec | Current figure (November 2026) |
|---|---|
| Time live | 24 hours |
| Length of one clip | Up to 60 seconds; longer videos split into clips |
| Stories per day | No daily limit |
| Frame and size | 9:16 vertical, 1080 x 1920 pixels recommended |
| Viewer list | Up to 48 hours after posting |
| Story insights | Up to two years after posting |
The time, clip and daily figures come from Instagram’s Stories guide. The pixel size is the spec Meta publishes for Instagram Stories ads, with 600 x 1067 as the minimum, and it fits organic Stories too. Keep text away from the top and bottom edges, where your name and the reply bar sit; our Story mockup guide lists Meta’s safe-zone percentages.
The 24 hours has one paid exception. Instagram Plus, an optional subscription, includes Story Extend, which keeps a Story live for 48 hours, according to Instagram’s Plus announcement.
Every Instagram story sticker, and where the response goes
Open the sticker tray with the sticker icon at the top after you capture a photo or video. Stickers fall into three groups. Some ask the viewer to tap: poll, quiz, emoji slider, countdown. Some ask for words: Questions, Reveal, Add Yours. Some send people somewhere: link, product, mention, location. Only a typed reply reaches your inbox.
Instagram’s sticker help page lists 17 entries today: Add Yours, Captions, Countdown, Current time or weather, Cutouts, Donation, GIF, Hashtag, Link, Location, Mention, Music, Poll or emoji slider, Product, Questions, Quiz and Selfie. Frames and Reveal have their own pages. The help page warns that some stickers may be unavailable in Japan and Europe (checked November 2026).
| Sticker | What it does | Where the response lands |
|---|---|---|
| Poll | Two answer options; results update live | A sticker tap in Insights |
| Quiz | Four answer choices, one correct | A sticker tap in Insights |
| Emoji slider | Viewers rate something on a slider | A sticker tap in Insights |
| Questions | An open prompt viewers answer in text | Sent to you privately; you can share one in a new Story without the sender’s name |
| Reveal | Blurs a photo behind a hint | The photo unblurs after the viewer replies, and the reply comes to your DMs |
| Countdown | A timer to a date | Followers can get a reminder when it ends |
| Add Yours | A prompt others answer with their own Story | Their Stories, with a “Started by” credit |
| Frames | A polaroid that develops when viewers shake their phone | On the Story only |
| Link | Sends viewers to a web page | Off Instagram; counted as a link tap |
| Product | Tags up to 5 products from an Instagram shop | The product page |
| Mention | Tags up to 20 accounts per photo or video | Their notifications and DMs |
| Location, Hashtag | Adds a tappable place or tag | That place or tag page |
| Music, GIF, Captions, Cutouts, Selfie, time or weather | Sound, motion, captions and custom stickers | Nothing to answer |
| Donation | Asks viewers to give to a fundraiser | A donation |
The poll, quiz and Questions details come from Instagram’s Stories guide, and the rest from the Reveal, Frames and Add Yours help pages.
Two stickers have eligibility rules. Every account has been able to add a link sticker since October 27, 2021, except new accounts and accounts that repeatedly break the Community Guidelines, according to Instagram’s link sticker announcement. Setup and fixes are in our Instagram story link sticker guide. Product stickers need a shop on Instagram. Creators can tag a brand’s products with a public account, if they are 13 or older and the account has been active for 30 days with no more than two policy violations, or with the brand’s approval as a branded content partner, per Instagram’s product sticker page.
For finished examples of each sticker in use, see our Instagram story ideas and templates.
Instagram story features: Close Friends, Highlights and archive
Close Friends lets you share a Story with a list you choose. Highlights keep chosen Stories on your profile after the 24 hours end. The Stories Archive saves every Story privately by default, so you can add an old Story to a Highlight later, download it or share it again.
Close Friends. Go to your profile, tap the menu icon, select Close Friends and add people. When you post, tap Close Friends instead of Your story. People are not notified when you add or remove them, and no one can ask to join, according to Instagram’s Close Friends list page. People on the list see a green ring around your photo. For a business, it works as a VIP list for early access or a members-only code.
Highlights. Open a live Story, tap More and tap Highlight, then choose or create one. You can also tap New on your profile and pick Stories from your archive. Highlights stay until you remove them, and anyone allowed to see your Stories can see them, per Instagram’s Highlights page. Name them by the question they answer: Prices, Reviews, How to book. Highlights sit under your bio and above your posts, so a new visitor sees them first.
Story archive. Archive is on by default, and you can turn it off in your archive settings. Instagram’s archive page warns that some archived Stories lose their music or show a frozen GIF to save storage. Instagram also says Stories shared publicly, archived ones included, are used to improve AI at Meta unless you delete them or make your account private, per its page on how long Stories stay visible.
How to mention someone and reshare Stories
Type @ and a username in the text tool to mention someone. You can mention up to 20 accounts in each photo or video. Each person gets a notification and a DM with a preview of your Story, and the preview disappears from the chat after 24 hours. To mention someone after posting, tap the Story and tap Mention.
Those details come from Instagram’s mention help page. The same works in reverse: when a customer mentions you, the mention arrives in your DMs and you can add their Story to yours. You can only reshare a Story from a public account, and your viewers can see who posted it first, according to Instagram’s resharing page. To control who reshares yours, go to Settings, then Sharing and reuse, then Stories to stories.
Customer mentions are the cheapest proof a small business can post. A reshared Story shows the customer’s own account, which a quote you type yourself cannot do.
Who can see your Story, and who can respond
Only you can see who watched your Story. Swipe up on a live Story for the viewer list, or open it from your archive for up to 48 hours after posting. View counts include replays, so the number can be higher than the list of names. Comments on Stories are public to everyone who can see the Story, while replies stay private in your DMs.
Instagram’s viewer help page adds that the list leaves out Instagram Plus subscribers who previewed your Story. On a public account, anyone you follow can comment on your Stories by default; on a private account, only followers you follow back can, per Instagram’s page on Story comments. The full comparison is in our guide to who can see Instagram story replies.
Four controls decide who sees and answers your Stories:
- Story replies: Profile, then Menu, then Messages and story replies, then Story replies. By default anyone who can see your Story can reply, per Instagram’s story replies page.
- Comments: tap + and Story, open Settings, tap Story, then Allow comments, and choose Off. For one Story, open its Options and tap Turn off commenting.
- Hide your Story: Menu, then Story, live and location, then Hide your story and live videos from specific people. They still see your profile and posts, per Instagram’s hide Story page.
- Reshares: Settings, then Sharing and reuse, then Stories to stories.
Instagram does not notify anyone when a regular Story is screenshotted, according to its Stories guide.
How to check Instagram Stories analytics in Insights
Story Insights show how each Story performed. You need a public account, personal or professional. On your phone, swipe up on a live Story and tap the insights icon; past Stories sit in your account insights next to your posts and reels. Instagram keeps Story insights for up to two years, even though the Story itself is no longer viewable.
| Metric | What Instagram counts | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Views | Times the Story was played or displayed | Reach, plus replays |
| Viewers | Unique accounts that saw it at least once | Your real audience size |
| Interactions | Replies, shares, sticker taps, link taps | Total response |
| Accounts engaged | Unique accounts that replied, shared or tapped a sticker | How many people responded |
| Profile activity | Profile visits, follows and website clicks | Movement from the Story to your account |
The definitions come from Instagram’s Story insights page. Account insights cover any period inside the past 90 days, per its account insights page.
The number worth tracking each week is Accounts engaged divided by Viewers: the share of people who did something. Compare it by Story type (an ask, a proof Story, an offer) instead of by day. If offer Stories reach many viewers but few engaged accounts, the ask in them is too vague.
Where do Instagram story replies go?
A story reply is a direct message. It opens a chat between the viewer and you, with your Story attached at the top. On professional accounts, new chats from followers land in Primary and new chats from people who do not follow you land in Requests. After 24 hours the Story image disappears from the chat, and the text of the reply stays.
Meta’s messaging documentation sets the rule for any app that replies on your behalf. A business account can message someone only after that person messages it, and for most actions the window to answer lasts 24 hours. A reply to your Story opens that window. A separate Human Agent tag gives a human agent seven days to answer.
The notification Meta sends to a connected app carries the Story’s ID next to the reply text, per Meta’s webhook examples. That is how a reply tool knows which Story someone answered, and which link to send.
A poll vote, a quiz answer or a slider rating works differently. Insights counts it as a sticker tap, but it sends no message, so no chat opens. This is the reason to treat Stories as a conversation channel. When you want a conversation, ask for typed words:
- Ask for a typed reply. “Reply PRICE and I’ll send the menu” gives viewers an exact word to type and gives you a clear signal in the inbox.
- Answer inside 24 hours. By hand, that means checking your inbox at least once a day while a Story is live.
- Check Requests every day. First chats from people who do not follow you land there, so new customers often start in Requests.

Instagram Stories for business: a weekly routine
A simple weekly routine for creators and small businesses: one Story that asks a question, two that show your work, one that shows proof, and one offer that asks for a reply. Keep each Story to 3 to 5 frames. Answer every reply the same day, and at the end of the week move the best frames into a Highlight.
| Day | Story | Sticker or prompt | What comes back |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monday | Ask | Questions sticker: “What should I cover this week?” | Private answers and next week’s topics |
| Tuesday | Show the work | Poll on a choice you are making | Sticker taps and a sense of what people like |
| Wednesday | Teach | One tip over 3 frames, ending “Reply TIP for the checklist” | DMs from people who want more |
| Thursday | Proof | Reshare a customer’s mention, with their credit | Trust from people who have not bought yet |
| Friday | Offer | Countdown to the deadline, plus “Reply BOOK and I’ll send the link” | DMs from people ready to buy |
| Weekend | Review | Move the best frames to Highlights and check Insights | A profile that answers buyers while you are away |
The first week gives you a baseline in Insights. By the fourth week, Monday’s answers tell you what to teach, Thursday’s reshares have filled a Reviews Highlight, and Friday’s prompt has a record you can compare in Accounts engaged. If Friday’s offer gets no replies three weeks in a row, change the offer before you change the Stories.
How to answer story replies while you are offline
Answer story replies automatically with a tool that connects to Meta’s official messaging API. The tool receives each reply the moment it arrives and sends the message you wrote, with your link, inside Meta’s 24-hour window. It answers at 2 pm and at 2 am the same way. You write the message once per campaign and reply by hand when someone asks a follow-up question.
CreatorFlow is an Instagram DM automation tool and a Meta Tech Provider (since December 2025). Its story reply automation answers text replies and emoji reactions to your Stories with your message, up to 1,000 characters, link included. You can add one step before the link, such as an opening message or an Email Gate that collects an email address first.
Story reply automation is on every CreatorFlow plan, including Free. Pro costs $15 a month, or $144 a year, and adds the Email Gate, link click tracking, CSV export and geographic analytics. Growth costs $30 a month, or $288 a year, for up to five Instagram accounts, per CreatorFlow’s pricing page (checked November 2026).
Setup is one screen: connect your account, choose story replies as the trigger, write the message with your link and turn it on. The full walkthrough is in our story reply automation guide, and our list of Instagram story DM automation use cases shows seven ways businesses use it.
FAQ
How do you use Instagram Stories for business?
Post short Stories most days and give each one a job: ask, show your work, share proof or make an offer. End offer Stories with a word to reply, such as “Reply BOOK”. Answer each reply within 24 hours, and save your best Stories to Highlights named Prices, Reviews and How to book.
How long can an Instagram Story be?
One clip can be up to 60 seconds long. Instagram splits a longer video into back-to-back clips. Each Story stays live for 24 hours, and there is no daily limit on how many you post.
What stickers can you use on Instagram Stories?
Instagram’s Help Center lists 17 sticker entries, from Add Yours, Countdown and Link to Poll, Questions and Quiz, plus Frames and Reveal on their own pages. Some stickers may be unavailable in Japan and Europe, and the Product sticker has eligibility rules.
Can you see who viewed your Instagram Story after 24 hours?
Yes, for up to 48 hours after posting. Open your profile menu, tap Archive, find the Story and swipe up. After that the names are gone, but Story Insights keep the counts for up to two years.
Do Instagram Story replies go to DMs?
Yes. A reply opens a private chat between the viewer and you, with the Story attached. Comments on a Story are public to everyone who can see it.
Can you schedule an Instagram Story?
Yes, if your account is eligible. Create the Story, tap the three-dot menu before sharing, tap Schedule and choose a date and time. Instagram posts it for you at that time.
Does Instagram tell people when you screenshot their Story?
No. Instagram does not send a notification when someone screenshots a regular Story. Disappearing photos and videos sent in DMs are the exception.
