Your Instagram Must Be Public to Automate

A private Instagram account never receives comment notifications, so DM automation silently does nothing. Here is why, and how to check yours in 20 seconds.

Your Instagram Must Be Public to Automate

Your Instagram account has to be public for comment automation to work. Meta’s own documentation states that a private professional account does not receive comment or mention notifications, so an automation tool is never told the comment happened. Nothing errors and nothing warns you. The automation is live, the comment is there, and no DM ever sends.

That silence is why people spend hours on this. There is no failure message to search for.

Switch the account to public and the same setup starts working on the next comment.

Key Takeaways

  • Private professional accounts get no comment notifications. This is Meta’s rule, not a tool setting.
  • The failure is silent. No error, no warning, no flag in the dashboard.
  • Two settings must both be right: the account has to be professional (Business or Creator), and it has to be public.
  • The fix takes 20 seconds and works on the next comment, not retroactively.
  • Existing comments stay reachable for seven days, so switching to public and running Rewind can recover recent ones.

How to Check, in 20 Seconds

On your phone:

  1. Open Instagram and go to your profile
  2. Tap the three lines, then Settings and privacy
  3. Tap Account privacy
  4. Private account must be switched off

While you are there, confirm the account is professional. In Settings and privacy, look for Account type and tools. If it says “Switch to professional account”, you are on a personal account, and automation does not work on personal accounts at all.

Both conditions have to be true at once. Professional and public. Either one on its own is not enough.

Why Meta Works This Way

Comment automation runs on notifications that Instagram sends to a connected tool when something happens on your account. Meta calls these webhooks. A comment arrives, Instagram notifies the tool, the tool matches the keyword and sends the DM.

Meta’s Instagram Platform documentation is explicit that comment and mention notifications are not sent for private professional accounts. The tool is never told. It cannot match a keyword against a comment it has never seen.

This is a platform rule, so it applies to every tool that automates Instagram comments, not to any one product. There is no setting, plan or workaround that changes it, and any tool claiming otherwise is describing something else.

What Still Works on a Private Account

Not everything depends on comment notifications.

TriggerWorks while private?
Comment on a post or reelNo
Comment on a story mentionNo
Story replyYes, replies arrive as messages
Keyword sent directly in a DMYes, messages arrive as messages

Story replies and direct messages reach you as messages rather than comment notifications, so those triggers can still fire. That is why some accounts see a confusing mix: the story automation works, the comment automation is dead, and nothing explains the difference.

If your comment automation is silent but your story automation sends, check privacy first. That pattern is close to diagnostic.

After You Switch: Recovering Recent Comments

Switching to public does not backfill. Instagram does not resend notifications it never sent.

What it does give you is the reply window. Instagram allows a private reply to a comment on a post or reel for seven days after that comment. Comments inside that window are still reachable.

So after switching to public, run Rewind on your recent posts. It goes back through the previous seven days and sends to people whose comments were missed. Rewind covers what it reaches. Anything older than seven days is closed to every tool, and the reply windows explains the timing.

If It Is Public and Still Nothing Sends

Public and professional are necessary, not sufficient. Three other things produce the same silence.

You tested from the account that owns the automation. An automation cannot DM its own owner. This is the most common cause of “nothing sends” overall. Testing from a second account covers it.

The keyword did not match. Your trigger is LINK and the comment said “link please”. When keywords miss covers matching.

The connection went stale. Open Workspace Settings, the IG Account tab, and press Test connection. It checks Instagram login, activity updates, comment access and message sending, and names the one that failed. If a check fails, press Re-authenticate Instagram, which keeps your automations and contacts. Do not press Disconnect, which deletes them.

The full list is in comment-to-DM not sending, and connection problems covers setup-stage failures.

A Note on Private Accounts as a Strategy

Some creators keep an account private on purpose, for a close community or a paid group. That is a legitimate choice, and comment automation is not available on it.

The workable pattern is a public account that funnels into the private one. The public account runs the automation and sends the link. The private account is the destination. Selling access to a community through DMs covers that shape, and DM automation for community owners goes wider.

FAQ

Does Instagram automation work on a private account?

Comment automation does not. Meta does not send comment or mention notifications for private professional accounts, so no tool is told the comment happened. Story replies and direct messages still arrive as messages, so those triggers can work.

Do I have to be a Business account, or is Creator fine?

Either works. The requirement is a professional account, which covers both Business and Creator. Personal accounts are not supported at all.

I switched to public. Why did nothing send for old comments?

Instagram does not resend notifications retroactively. Comments from before the switch were never delivered to the tool. Comments inside the seven-day reply window can still be reached with Rewind.

Will switching to public affect my reach?

Instagram distributes public professional accounts normally. The privacy setting controls who can follow and see your content without approval, not how the feed ranks you.

Is this a CreatorFlow limitation?

No. It is a Meta platform rule that applies to every tool automating Instagram comments. It comes from how Instagram sends activity notifications, not from any product’s design.

How do I know for certain that privacy was the problem?

Switch to public, then comment your keyword from a second Instagram account on a fresh post. If the DM arrives, privacy was it. If it does not, work through the four other causes above.

Instagram account and notification behaviour reflects Meta’s Instagram Platform documentation as of August 2026, which states that comment and mention notifications are not sent for private professional accounts. Reply windows: seven days for a private reply to a comment on a post or reel, 24 hours for story replies. Verified 30 August 2026.
