Email Gate: Collect Emails from Instagram Automatically

5 min read

Email Gate asks users to share their email address before receiving your DM content. Every email is saved to your CreatorFlow Contacts, where you can export them as a CSV and import into any email marketing tool.

How Email Gate Works

  1. Someone triggers your automation (comments a keyword, replies to a story, etc.)
  2. CreatorFlow sends a DM asking for their email address
  3. The user replies with their email
  4. CreatorFlow validates the email format and saves it to Contacts
  5. CreatorFlow delivers the actual content (link, message, etc.)

Setting Up Email Gate

  1. Go to the Automations page and open your automation (or create a new one)
  2. Scroll to the Pre-DM Options section and toggle Email Gate on
  3. Save the automation

Where Emails Are Stored

Every email collected through Email Gate is saved to the Contacts page in CreatorFlow. Each contact entry includes:

  • Instagram username
  • Email address
  • Date collected
  • Which automation collected it

You can export all contacts as a CSV file and import them into any email marketing tool: Mailchimp, ConvertKit, Beehiiv, ActiveCampaign, or others.

The Conversion Trade-Off

Asking for an email is a bigger ask than Follow Gate. Expect 40-50% of users to drop off at this step. That means roughly half of the people who trigger your automation won't provide an email and won't receive the content.

Why it's still worth it:

  • You own the email list. Instagram can change its algorithm, restrict your reach, or suspend your account. Your email list is yours forever.
  • Email converts better than DMs. You can send sequences, newsletters, and offers directly to their inbox with no algorithm in the way.
  • High-intent leads. Someone who gives you their email genuinely wants what you're offering. These are your best potential customers.

FAQ

Are the email addresses verified?+

CreatorFlow checks that the input looks like a valid email format (contains @ and a domain). It does not send a verification email. Most users provide their real email because they want the content you're offering.

Can I connect Email Gate to Mailchimp or ConvertKit?+

Not directly. CreatorFlow stores emails in Contacts. You can export them as a CSV file and import into any email marketing tool: Mailchimp, ConvertKit, Beehiiv, ActiveCampaign, or others.

Can I use Email Gate and Follow Gate together?+

No. Follow Gate, Email Gate, and Opening DM are mutually exclusive. You can only enable one pre-DM option per automation.

What if someone types a fake email?+

CreatorFlow validates the email format but cannot verify if the mailbox exists. If someone enters a fake but valid-looking email, the content is still delivered. In practice, most users enter real emails because they expect to receive something at that address.

How many emails can I collect?+

There is no limit on stored emails. The limit is on DMs sent per month (500 on Free, 5,000 on Pro, 50,000 on Growth). Each Email Gate interaction uses one DM for the email request and one DM for the content delivery.
